Dr. Peter Barrett is a HRB Clinician Scientist Postdoctoral Fellow, and a Consultant in Public Health Medicine in HSE South West (St. Finbarr’s Hospital, Cork).
Peter graduated from Medicine in UCC with First Class Honours in 2010. He worked in clinical medicine and paediatrics before entering Higher Specialist Training in Public Health Medicine. He holds Masters degrees in Global Health (Karolinska Institutet) and in Public Health (University of Cambridge), as well as Fellowship of the Faculty of Public Health UK (FFPH), and the Faculty of Public Health Medicine Ireland (FFPHMI). He was the first graduate of the Wellcome Trust HRB Irish Clinical Academic Training (ICAT) Programme in Ireland, and completed a PhD in large-scale epidemiology in the School of Public Health & INFANT Research Centre in 2021.
In 2023, Peter became the first public health physician to be awarded a HRB Clinician Scientist Fellowship.
His research in INFANT focuses on the prediction and prevention of age-related chronic diseases in women using information from international routine maternal health records. He also contributes to teaching across a range of degree programmes in UCC, and he provides research supervision to medical students, MPH students, Academic Interns, Specialist Registrars, and PhD students.
